Favorite authors: (Among many others :) Samuel Johnson (as both author and subject), Raymond Chandler, Willa Cather, Ralph Waldo Emerson, John D. MacDonald, Theodore Dalrymple.

Favorite periodicals & newspapers: Mostly read newspapers online these days--NY Times(I also like doing the Saturday crossword puzzle once in a while-hardest one of the week), Washington Post, Wall St. Journal, LA Times (especially the Food section on Thursdays) Among other magazines: Vanity Fair, Sports Illustrated, Saveur, National Review, City Journal.

Interest and taste in the arts: Enjoy the arts-especially like the Impressionists and the American artists of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries who followed, more or less, in their footsteps. (Robert Henri, Childe Hassam, John Sloan, Edward Hopper.) Also enjoy some of the Japanese painters (Especially Hokusai and Hiroshige).

Some favorite CDs: Getz/Gilberto, John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman, Ella Fitzgerald-Best of the Songbooks (trust me on all of the above) some other favorite artists: Dave McKenna, Paul Desmond, Ben Webster (jazz)-- Johnny Adams, Johnny Copeland (R & B/blues)-- Rubenstein, Horowitz, Heifetz, Isaac Stern, Alicia de Larrocha (classical).

On a more specific, short-term level, want to get back into playing tennis, to continue learning golf, and hopefully taking up yoga.

What changes in recent society please you the most? Some advances in technology have increased quality of life a great deal.

What disturbs you most about today's society? Sometimes technology can be a two-edged sword and create new difficulties. I dislike the overall coarsening of our culture and decline of civility. The downward spiral of results in our public education (Somebody said, very aptly, that we have gone from teaching Latin and Greek in our grammar schools 100 years ago to teaching remedial English in our universities.) I should say I'm pleased that there are many people out there who are exceptions to those overall negative trends, and live and act with integrity and good sense. And it seems as if there is a growing return to our better values. (Shakespeare said it better-"There's a divinity that shapes our ends-rough hew them how we will.") I hope so.

Write a short sketch about yourself: I started out as a coin dealer, but spent the last 17 years of my working life as a social worker, and the last 7 of those working with homeless men. One reason I left is that I couldn't put up with the bureaucracy. Another is that I wanted to write. At first, I used a quasi case study approach, but then get interested in the characters, and developing certain themes. So I began to fictionalize. But that got tricky. I had to decide on an approach to the subject matter, the POV, and then, to teach myself to write - easier said than done. I got into a writer's workshop, and got good critiques, and I've been going at it ever since.
There are lots of challenges, one of which is finding and giving love - which is why I'm here. In any case, I've taken charge of my life, and I think that's a good thing.

What changes in recent society please you the most?: Because I have a lesbian daughter, I am pleased to see a more generous attitude toward non-conventional lifestyles growing in the United States and the West.

What disturbs you most about today's society?: The lack of intellectual curiosity among so many of our young people disturbs me. I am also disturbed by the slovenly dress of both young men and women--and some mature adults as well. And tattoos on girls and women I find almost revolting.

Most important characteristics in a date or mate: A warm and generous attitude toward other people; a liberal political viewpoint; a willingness to talk but to be able to be happy together without always needing to talk.

Write a short sketch about yourself: I am a 73-year-old white male who is well educated and relatively active still in the academic world. I attend church rather regularly, but my religious views are not traditional. I like spectator sports, especially the Baltimore Orioles and the Washington Redskins. I have not yet really warmed up to the Ravens. I also like golf, especially Tiger Woods. I stay in close contact with my daughters despite their being in New York City and Boston. They feel free to share their thoughts with me. And, I must admit to liking the CSI crime TV shows and also Animal Planet. The death of Steve Irwin was a severe blow to the world, I believe.

Favorite periodicals & newspapers: On NPR: This American Life, Sound & Spirit, ATC.

Interest in taste in music: All good. I’m a dial twister exercising and driving.

Interest and taste in films/favorites: P.T. Anderson’s Magnolia-type films, comedies.

Religion and interest in religion: Christian.

What changes in recent society please you the most?: People are more open to others. For example, one of my eighth graders, in an M.L. King essay, said he was grateful that Dr. King helped make it possible to marry a European-American man, which brought him cousins who taught him to skateboard. Other examples are people who work hard to share their interests in various blogs and web sites, and get involved in different groups which work to recreate the old-fashioned extended family.

What disturbs you most about today's society?: Do you remember the original Saturday Night Live, where Dan Ackroyd would play the news anchor who responded to each of Jane Curtain’s commentaries by calling her an ignorant slut. Back then it was satire; today it’s the news. This tribal acrimony is counter to everything this little-brother-of -the sixties thought life would be like. And goes counter to today’s major problem: the lack of wealth creation and the solid, generous, optimistic values our once prosperous society held. We seem more short-term now, with little discussion of how we’ll leave our kids a more benevolent world.

Most important characteristics in a date or mate: She can find joy in the basic things in life, is too involved to worry about a new couch, can balance solitary reading and writing with family and community involvement.

Write a short sketch about yourself: I’ve been a single, full time Dad for 13 years which got me out of traveling and now back to Junior High ( I almost put “Maniac Magee” in my favorite books list). Since I work with great people, and enjoy my family and son’s friends, I should be more content than I am. Life gets better when one can look at the problems which come up during the day and see how they will be a good story by dinnertime.

Things you would still like to accomplish in your life time: Get married to the love of my life, grow old together and have one boy and one girl, maybe a third. To travel to the UK, Ireland, Italy, Israel and most countries beginning with I, lol. To own a 1968 Dodge Charger. Pay off my house. Make 1 Million dollars in 1 year.

What changes in recent society please you the most?: How smoking is no longer considered cool.

What disturbs you most about today's society?: The lack of self reliance and responsibility. People blame something else for there actions rather then themselves. This is a root of most of the problems in the world I believe. From declining morality to Islamic extremist..

Most important characteristics in a date or mate: As for the type of lady I'm looking for, I would like someone intelligent, so we could converse about deep subjects. A real feminine lady who
is honest and kind. Someone who could share my interest in books and culture. Someone as laid back as I, who doesn't haveto go out every night, but is content to also stay at home and be together. Also a non-smoker, never been married. And you should want to have children. I live in a small town, with no plans to move, so if you must live in a big city, I'm not your sort of guy.

Write a short sketch about yourself: I'm a pretty nice, polite guy. Think of myself as being old fashioned and a gentleman. I'm laidback, takes alot to get me mad. Have a tendency to be a little cynical about things but working on being more positive. I believe I would be a good husband and father.

Write a short sketch about yourself: I am a somewhat shy person with an unusual sense of humor, and as befits an Aquarius, I am something of a dreamer, but also extremely imaginative; this comes in handy since I am a stage and professional voice-over actor. I have always loved acting, ever since I was little; I specialize in character roles and love taking annual classes in stage combat (particularly swordsmanship!). I like to express myself in writing, and I live in Forest Hills and love it because I've always enjoyed the quiet areas of the city rather than the noisy, more populated parts, understandable since I grew up in Manhattan's upper East Side (which could be very crowded and noisy, especially around parade times!). I enjoy traveling (my favorite city is London) and have been to some rather unusual lands, including spending Halloween(my favorite holiday!) in Ireland and Transylvania (in Dracula's Castle no less!). I am an avid collector, and I have a large collection of films, books, records and tapes.
