Most important characteristics in a date or mate Supportive, emotionally available, relaxed, accepting of people different than himself, enjoys travel, relaxed, good sense of humor, enjoys a range of activities.

Write a short description of yourself I am a psychologist who works with lower income folks helping them gain and maintain self sufficiency. I also work with  children in foster care to make sure that they are well cared for which is the most satisfying work I do.

I am an outgoing, fun upbeat, physically attractive, healthy and energy filled woman looking for a partner who can respect me for who I am and help me to be my best self. I offer the same in return. I am looking for someone with strong family values, who is honest, competent and secure. I'd like to share life's travels, struggles, and triumphs with that person who agrees that a dedicated other makes life all the more sweet. Traits that I consider meaningful about myself are faithful, easy going, gentle, quite kind, and generous.

Field(s) of study  Humanities, Poetics, English, Creative Writing, Critical Theory

Degree B.A., M.F.A., some Ph.D. work

FAVORITE BOOKS All time favorites? Moby Dick, The Brothers Karamazov, Don Quixote, The Tale of Genji, Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson, The Last Temptation of Christ, The Remains of the Day, the I Claudius series, Watership Down, the Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit, The World of Pooh, The Way of Zen by Alan Watts, The Little Prince, Alice in Wonderland, the works of Shakespeare, the poems of Emily Dickinson, and the poems of Walt Whitman.

WHAT'S ON YOUR NIGHT TABLE? A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin, The Girl who Played with Fire by Stieg Larsson (haven't yet started it), Walden and Civil Disobedience by Thoreau, Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer, The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci, 501 Italian Verbs, and the June issue of the NY Review of books, plus a lamp, an alarm clock, and various lotions and potions.

FAVORITE periodicals & newspapers I read the NY Times online, the NY Review of Books when I can get hold of a second hand copy, and sometimes National Geographic, as well as various periodicals on do-it-yourself projects, on crafts, and on Buddhism. I read the occasional literary or education journal, as well as all sorts of stuff online.

INTEREST and taste in the arts You name it. High and low culture and everything in between. Film and music are tied for number one, followed by visual arts, and then theater, and then dance. I have a marginal interest in opera.

Interest in taste in music Very eclectic, as with everything else. Rock, pop, oldies, folk, classic country and western, some jazz, jazz vocalists, show tunes, R&B/soul/funk, some classic punk and hardcore, singer/songwriter, crooners. Some of my Pandora stations: The Jim Carroll Band, Dean Martin, Ray Charles, Billy Bragg, Billie Holiday, Leonard Cohen, Nina Simone. You get the idea. I enjoy some orchestral and classical music, but know little about it. I especially like Renaissance and Baroque music and Bach. I strongly dislike most Romantic and pretty much all Modernist orchestral music (everything post-1850) and have no interest in bombastic film scores

Interest and taste in films/favorites

Akira Kurosawa is, in my opinion, the greatest film director of all time. Toshiro Mifune is one of the greatest actors of all time and Seven Samurai and Rashomon are two of the greatest films of all time. I think that's all that I can state unequivocally. Other than that, again, my tastes are eclectic. I enjoy dramas, especially "gritty" dramas; foreign films; indies and art-house; thrillers; classic Hollywood; classic westerns and especially spaghetti westerns; documentaries; true crime; excellent HBO series, such as Sopranos, Deadwood, Rome, etc. Some of my favorite directors: the Coen brothers, Martin Scorcese, Quentin Tarantino, Pedro Almodovar, Ang Lee, Michael Moore, Hitchcock, Kubrick, Fellini, Cassevetes, Bergman.

Interest in travel/favorite places Well, I've traveled probably more than most, but not nearly as much as some. I've spent a lot of time in Europe, particularly Italy, Denmark, and Spain. I backpacked through Europe on one of my trips. I've also traveled all over the USA and Mexico. I drove across the US once and took the Amtrak across country and back another time. I look forward, when time and money allows, to travel to some of the "exotic" places that I've never been, particularly in South America, Africa, and the Far East, and, if I had a traveling companion, would love to go on road trips here in the US. I'm definitely what you would call a "cultural" traveler, but I also can see myself lying on a beach somewhere drinking margaritas and doing absolutely nothing. I love the national parks and have been to quite a few of them. I also enjoy weekend visits to New York City and Boston, and I love the southwest.

Hobbies & pastimes The arts, movies, music, reading & literature, good conversation, dining out, hiking, walking, working out at the gym, kickboxing, community work, socializing with friends, cooking & baking, good TV (movies, PBS, HBO), web surfing, games, & pursuing creative interests (quilt making, writing, fabric design, art, photography). As noted above, I love to travel, and would be into camping if I had someone to go with. I'm a bit of a news/politics junkie, am politically liberal, and am mostly vegetarian (fish only).

Things you would still like to accomplish in your life time I have this dream of retiring in a country cottage overlooking the ocean, somewhere in Sicily, or spending my golden years driving around the country in an RV. There are still many, many places I want to see, including Machu Picchu and the Great Wall, and I especially want to go on a Buddhist pilgrimage tour and visit Bodh Gaya. In terms of my career, I’d like to attain a tenure track teaching position and eventually have more time to devote to writing. I’d love to get a collection of poems or stories published. I have thought about spending more time doing service and volunteer work and have considered joining the Peace Corps at some point. A farmhouse in the country? A menagerie? An adopted child? All of these have been dreams at one time or another.

What changes in recent society please you the most It was a moving experience to see the first Black man elected President of the United States and this was truly a great leap forward for the country, but his policies, I’m afraid have been one step forward, two steps back, and he has been something of a disappointment as President. Rapid improvements in technology are a double-edged sword , but I think that it’s groundbreaking the way that the internet has given the average person a voice (a megaphone, really) and has helped serve as a (political) equalizer. The ongoing advances in info tech and gadgetry make one’s head spin, but it is a blessing to have a world of info quite literally at your fingertips. Although it has not been an issue of much personal interest to me, I was pleased to see the same-sex marriage bill pass in NY; it shows that folks are gradually becoming more tolerant, open-minded, and progressive, at least in certain areas.

Most important characteristics in a date or mate A like-minded soul with similar interests & inclinations. I value kindness, gentleness, cleverness, a love of animals & kids, a sense of ambition & purpose (meaningful work) & a sense of political & social awareness. Creativity/artistic talent  is a plus. If you love animals & love to travel, those are two big pluses. Physical fitness is important, as is a sense of FUN & adventure. This is just a wish list--would never expect someone to have ALL these qualities. I'm not perfect, and I'm not seeking perfection or some "ideal." Just a companion, someone with whom I can share the joys & sorrows of day to day life, someone independent & honest. I'm looking for someone who genuinely wants a LTR & who knows how to have fun, relax & enjoy life. Someone who'll accept me as I am with the flaws & imperfections I come packaged with, since, if you cast away my demons, then my  angels may leave too.

Write a short description of yourself I’m very physically fit and healthy, and have a great shape. I have dark brown hair and a chin-length bob haircut, very well-styled, as I spend a fair amount of money on the upkeep of my coif. I have fair skin that I keep well-tanned and very few wrinkles to speak of, but my age is starting to show in other ways, I suppose. I have big, dark-brown, expressive eyes (my best feature) and regularly wear make-up. I have a very young look and attitude, and I love my clothes and jewelry. I dress according to how I feel and can look trendy or nerdy or classy, depending on what I’m up to. Personality: I'm very expressive, creative, somewhat introverted except when with close friends (comfort/trust) or in front of a class (in control). I like to think I'm equally left & right brain oriented, but I suspect the left dominates, as far as that goes. Busy, super-organized, try to be a realist, a bit neurotic, candid, self-contained. ! I actually like to have some time on my own, to work on my own projects and "do my own thing." If you're conservative, politically or in terms of lifestyle, we probably wouldn't "click." And although I love the outdoors, I'm into laid back hiking and camping rather than high-adrenaline activities like downhill skiing. I'm artsy, bohemian, slightly nerdy, into urban cultural activities, young at heart! In terms of lifestyle, I live in a beautiful NYC-style artist’s loft in the culturally-rich Berkshires of western Massachusetts. I have a well-equipped kitchen and enjoy cooking and baking. People ALWAYS comment on how much they like my home because they find it warm and inviting and full of "personality." Someone once described my home environment as "joyful," and I liked that. I have two beautiful and well-behaved cats whom I love, and I have a great love of animals, in general. My siblings live in Boston, where I am from originally. My parents both passed away a very long time ago. I lived in San Francisco for ten years and in Albany, NY for around ten years.

Go find some of the people and places I visited when I was younger ( in Pakistan, Guinea, Algeria, Switzerland).

What's on your night table West of Kabul, East of New York by Ansary; How to Know God by Chopra; The Brass Verdict by Connolly (on my new Kindle)

Favorite periodicals & newspapers The New York Times; Sun Magazine; The New Yorker; Vanity Fair

Interest and taste in the arts I enjoy theater (I'm seeing "Rent" this weekend), independent and mainstream film, museums (our new Dali is well worth a visit to St. Petersburg), ballet, concerts, floral shows, Studio@620 (www.studio620.org)

Interest and taste in films/favorites  Recent films I've enjoyed are Win/Win, The Conspirator, The Concert, and Jane Eyre

Hobbies & pastimes Walking along the water with my dog, Yoga, spending time with my "grandkids" and being part of their amazing selves, reading (a surprise, huh?), movies, sharing meals, good conversations, Buddhist meditation, volunteer activities-especially taking AVP (www.avp.org)into prisons, swimming, hiking, travel....

Religion and interest in religion  Spirituality matters a lot to me. I'm hesitant to say that I am Quaker, as it is so often misunderstood. I also find support for my journey in Buddhist, Twelve Step, and alternative teachings. I'm headed for the IONS Conference (www.noetic.org) in San Francisco.

Things you would still like to accomplish in your life time Shortly after I've cleaned up the politics, I'll stop the wars and save our planet. And then maybe fly to the moon or one of the space stations.

What disturbs you most about today's society?  Social injustice, excessive wealth among a few, and rampant materialism. I still don't "get it" why we can't wake up to how easily we could live together if we followed the golden rule.

Most important characteristics in a date or mate I like men with deep voices (at least deeper than mine) and hearty laughs.  Write a short sketch about yourself I am attractive, healthy and fit, passionate about social issues, affectionate, and not very complicated. I've lived in Germany, Italy and Hawaii, as well as in several (other)states and D.C. My life continues to get better and, after loving my career in mental health and social programs, I now love retirement. I have wonderful friends, an adorable and easy pup,  amazing kids in my life, a strong interest in world affairs and politics, and a vital interest in sharing my good fortunes with others. I hope to meet a like-minded companion because I enjoy men and some things are simply more fun in tandem.

A3138, 1958, 5/6, D, n/s; Oxford University (UK); library consultant.

Favorite books Too difficult - too many and it changes! - Camus' "La Chute/The Fall" (and the rest), all Shakespeare (you can watch a play, set in some different context, and think topical lines have been added - check back and Shakespeare already had them there – amazing – humanity, humour and such lyrical beauty), all Donne, George Eliot, Philip Sidney's "Astrophil and Stella", Yourcenar's "Coup de Grace"(and the rest), all Bruce Chatwin, Walter Benjamin, Marlowe, Tournier's "Erl-King", all Cormac McCarthy, some Banville, Disraeli's "Tancred" (strange book - though it's a while since I read it - I might find it less interesting on rereading),“The Man Who Mistook his Wife for a Hat” and some others by Sacks. Hofstadter’s “Godel Escher Bach”. Some Ian McEwan, Ishiguro. Ian Rankin for Edinburgh (McCall Smith on Edinburgh cloys after a while), the Oxford English Dictionary......and more...

Endless!....

What's on your night table Michael Donaghy's "Conjure", Amartya Sen's "An Argumentative Indian", Pilger (as Ed) "Tell me no Lies", Sam Lipsyte "The Ask", an old Vogue and a radio (our wonderful BBC! - Ok your PBS is pretty fine, too - and WNYC)... and tea....and a black anglepoise lamp

Interest and taste in the arts Theatre – like Theatre de Complicite, the RSC and National etc - found “Blackwatch” moving, and enjoy the Edinburgh Festival when I can get there – have eclectic taste though not into musicals (apart from ones from the 30's 40's and 50's on film). Museums, galleries, churches - frescoed, baroque, gothic, renaissance. In museums, ancient jewellery, sculpture ancient and newer, Roman glass, illuminated manuscripts, medieval woodcarvings, Eastern art. Art - again, so many riches - Vermeer, Durer, Raphael, Da Vinci, Holbein, Renaissance Madonnas and Elizabethan miniatures, some Kandinsky, Van Gogh, Cezanne, Monet, Matisse, some Picasso, Hopper. A recent discovery for me – Hammershoi. Portraits in general, both paint and photography, and Gerhard Richter, who sort of blends both. Photography of all kinds - saw Capa and Taro's work at Barbican a few years ago in London and "The Mexican Suitcase" recently in N! ew York - also the strangeness of John Stezaker's appropriated and altered photographs at the Whitechapel gallery in London. Again....endless... we are so lucky

Interest in taste in music All over the place!

Interest and taste in films/favorites Am spoilt for film. Have 2 great arthouse cinemas here in Oxford - and I love the Film Forum in NY and Studio 28 in Paris. More lists (sorry - this must get tedious if anyone is actually reading this!)...in no particular order - La Jetee (is even on youtube and only short - watch if you've never seen it), the Thin Man series, the Third Man, The Leopard, Dead Man, In the Mood for Love, The Lives of Others, Der Himmel uber Berlin, LA Confidential, La Grande Illusion, The Spirit of the Beehive, Coup de Grace, Year of living Dangerously, The Thin Red Line, Generation Kill series (though don’t like war films that glorify war), some interesting westerns, including The Searchers, Of Gods and Men, La Haine, Bringing Up Baby, The Secret in their Eyes, The Philadelphia Story, Up in the Air, The Enigma of Kaspar Hauser (and others of Werner Herzog’s including the new Cave of Forgotten Dreams), Roman Holiday, Festen, A! mores Perros, The Class, Hidden, .....Must stop!

Interest in travel/favorite places I'm English but have spent much of my life abroad. My parents went to India for 25 years and I was born there and lived there till 8, then we returned to the English Lake District, where my parents came from, but we still travelled, too. I studied here and went abroad again, but have had a home in Oxford for the past decade. I love both home and away. I lived and worked in Paris last year, reacquainting myself with a city I'd known when young and nervous (found it much more fun to be middle-aged there). I enjoy France in general, also Berlin, Venice and London. I prefer cities where you can walk or use public transport. I've been travelling to the US for years and know the East and West coasts and little bits of the middle. I particularly like San Francisco and New York, but am getting to know and love NY more as I've had reason to travel there in the past 2 years and that will increase (and it’s an amazing c! ity!) I’ll always keep a house in Oxford, but I’m considering periods of home exchange in NY.

Hobbies & pastimes Books, languages, family and friends. Film, music, food and wine. Not particularly sporty, though live an active life and find it keeps me fit. Though I also drive, cycling is a good way to get around Oxford. I fenced for a while as I'd always wanted to, and believe it a beautiful sport (with a great outfit!). I've stopped for now but enjoyed it – I wasn't competitive enough to care about winning - could defend like mad but rarely attacked – great fun, though - and graceful, strenuous exercise. I adore dancing, preferably with a partner who can lead (in dancing!), but never get round to it often enough - there should be more dancing in life! I’ll attempt to learn almost anything - life is endlessly fascinating. I greatly respect craftspeople of all kinds and happily turn my hand to fixing/making, whether for practicality or pleasure.

What changes in recent society please you the most Increasing ease of contact internationally and amazing access to information – internet etc – as well as increasingly well-travelled and interbred world! – consequent breaking down of some barriers and ever-increasing rise of politics with a small “p” – people power

Most important characteristics in a date or mate Integrity, enthusiasm, commitment - to ideals, friends and family, to life and to fun! Intelligence without arrogance. Style without pretension. Ability to find some kind of humour, even warped or wicked, in dark times. Willingness to dance occasionally?

Write a short sketch about yourself Oh dear – providing info to strangers is a bizarre thing – Can the copious details already revealed above suffice? I’ve also, I think, written the longest entry – I’d really better stop now!

CARE TO JOIN ME?

As a child, I used to walk on my heels when barefoot to keep my feet clean. I still love to explore cities on foot (in good walking shoes!), especially those with distinctive neighborhoods like London. I've even walked the full length of Manhattan.

I love the motion of walking. I also like to get around by train. I once traveled cross-country in a sleeper car. It was magical! I woke up to pre-dawn light on Nevada's High Sierra. I watched movies in the observation car while rolling through small mid-Western towns. I even traveled to Paris from London for lunch just because I could thanks to the Eurostar.

Movement itself intrigues me. I like taking pictures of the Puerto Rican dance parties on Coney Island's boardwalk, and of the dancing and atmosphere at Ruby's, a bar that's fairly run down, but in ways that evoke nostalgia, not neglect.

Photography is a passion of mine. It's a companion that shows me things in the world and about myself that I wouldn't otherwise see.

I also like the company of Inspectors Morse and Lewis. I love mysteries, as well as movies and reading about  WWll. I am fascinated by language too (I am presently trying to master French) and I'm fortunate to be using my communications skills in a non-profit environment.

If you're a confident man who can appreciate my interests and who, like me, is big on shared experiences, then feel free to set things in motion!

I have a quirky and sarcastic sense of humor, and an optimistic outlook on life.

Favorite periodicals & newspapers: The New Yorker, The New York Times, Fitness magazines for women

Interest and taste in the arts: Chagall, Emily Carr, a few favorite southwestern artists and funky artists.

Interest in taste in music: Bach, Johnny Cash, Jazz, Steve Earle, John Hiatt, old spirituals, soulful stuff.

Hobbies & pastimes: I like the outdoors: kayaking, hiking, camping, riding bikes. I'd like to design my own house.

Religion and interest in religion: Spiritual not religious, although I think I qualify as a bad Episcopalian. I was brought up as Southern Baptist, and although I love the old hymns, this apple has fallen far from the tree.

Things you would still like to accomplish in your life time: I'd like to live out west, on a spread of land, and unplug somewhat from the information culture --- but not entirely. I'd like to volunteer in a literacy project, to work Native Americans, and to make writing my sole vocation.

What disturbs you most about today's society?: I don't like the fact that people watch TV more than they read, drive cars more than they walk, and allow themselves to be seduced by gross materialism.

Most important characteristics in a date or mate: My ideal man is a cowboy who reads great books. Is there such a thing as a vegetarian cowboy? My man needs to be financially stable, big-hearted, physically strong and fit, smart, funny, and kind. He should have a spiritual life but not feel the need to impose his beliefs on others. Since I don't drink alcohol or watch TV, these pursuits shouldn't be priorities in his life. He needs to like my kids and two dogs, and probably be more of a dog person than a cat person. He should be, like me, monogamous and intensely loyal.

Write a short sketch about yourself: I grew up in a traditional, southern, upper middle-class home with Appalachian roots. I've always felt I was something of a black sheep, and my life has been full of adventures, both light and dark. I'm strong, sometimes tough, always sensitive. I've been sober for eighteen years and follow a spiritual path that requires a the kind of humility that comes hard for most of us.

I'm a fiction writer, with three published books. My work is deep, funny, beautifully written and doesn't sell very well although it has won some big shiny awards. I'm a full-time professor of English, and although I need the kick of teaching, I consider this a second career that can get in the way of writing. Basically, I do it for the money, but it's probably good for me. It may actually be good for my students, but I'd feel more useful if I taught literacy to people who wanted to learn how to read instead of creative writing to graduate students who thought --- well, I'll save that for another time.

I’ve had some great teachers in my life, traditional ones and nontraditional ones. I believe I am on earth to learn and make myself useful. I read the other day that we are processing more information in a few minutes than people in the middle ages processed in a life-time....I'd like to slow that down. Right now, I don't know if I actually have time to date, but I'm open to meeting the right man.
