Favorite books: Recent favorites: Fifty Days of Solitude; The Pine Barrens; The Ride of Our Lives (laugh out loud funny); Great Courses lecture transcript, Questions of Value, Cold Mountain, many others. Strong preference for non-fiction/biographies.

What's on your night table: Don't have one.

Interest in taste in music: Strong. 50's R&R to 70's popular; classical; country; some jazz; not hip-hop or rap or salsa. Have huge collection of CD's, cassettes, and VHS tapes of various artists in concert.

Interest and taste in films/favorites: Haven't been in years, but still enjoy The Graduate, Same Time Next Year, When Harry Met Sally. Prefer comedies or biographical/historical themes. I'll pass on violence and sci fi.

Interest in travel/favorite places: Limited. Enjoy road trips and being outdoors. My late husband's long illness kept us close to home.

Hobbies & pastimes: Just getting back into gardening. Hope to resume nature photography. Catching up on reading.

Religion and interest in religion: None.

Things you would still like to accomplish in your life time: Perhaps remodel my home (should I decide to buy; currently have lease w/option.) Share life again with compatible person. Become active in hatha yoga or similar discipline to maintain good health.

Most important characteristics in a date or mate: Non-smoker. Tolerant; kind; intelligent; calm/patient (I'm not always); ability to enjoy some solitary activities; ability to find humor in most situations; cat lover would be a real plus. I wouldn't be a good match for a night owl who enjoys the club scene or someone who believes that the person who dies with the most toys wins.

Write a short sketch about yourself: I was sole caregiver for my late husband for many years, until his passing last year. I recently moved back to Phoenix, and am leasing a patio home, with option to purchase,in the complex where we lived prior to returning east to be near family during his illness. I've resumed working part-time with my former employer and enjoy being back in the southwest. I'm a non-smoker, don't eat meat, but not vegan, prefer casual lifestyle, non-materialistic, not a night owl, enjoy my home, and like having some solitary time each day. Not reclusive, however. Love cats, but haven't had one since 2004--but will one day.
Preferred method of contact by other SBL members (write, phone, e-mail): E-mail, please.

The evidence abounds. The question is, can we trace those lines of wretched behavior to a single place within each one of us so we can begin to turn that growing tide?

Personal accountability seems like it might be a good place to start.

Most important characteristics in a date or mate: Legitimate kindness and a familiarity with fairness; a solid sense of humor; mutual attraction; an ease with both listening and talking; a liberal sensibility; someone who cares about taking his life experiences and weaving them into a richer outlook because of both the good and bad that's come before; someone who understands the roles of compromise and balance in everyday life; someone who believes that finding life amusing is not a waste of time.

Write a short sketch about yourself: Hmm...the hardest part of this profile...it is odd to me to have walked this earth for so many years yet still feel so new at life: a new home, a new job and a relatively new career in the medical field after decades of pursuing the humanities are only the outward trappings of this surprising inner feeling. I'm very funny, kind, clever, passionate, talented, loyal and devoted to the truth. Physically, I'm slim, of average height and weight, with dark (and graying) hair, blue eyes and a warm smile. I hope something I have written here will cause someone with similar traits to take a chance and be in touch.

Preferred method of contact by other SBL members (write, phone, e-mail): Start with email or writing, with phone following the moment we both want.

What's on your night table: "Away" by Amy Bloom, "The Life of Pi," Yann Martel, The Qur'an.

Favorite authors: Iris Murdoch, Nicole Krauss, Jane Smiley, Isabelle Allende.

Favorite periodicals & newspapers: The New York Times, The New Yorker, Harper's.

Interest and taste in the arts: Opera (although my opportunities are limited for that here), contemporary visual arts as well as impressionism; dance; and any quality live theater.

Interest in taste in music: Contemporary rock, blues, jazz, classical, folk, alt rock -- almost anything except relentlessly pounding hip-hip, mindless rap, or sappy, commercial country.

Interest and taste in films/favorites: I tend toward foreign films, especially French. My favorites are "Jean de Florette," "Manon of the Spring," "I am Curious (Yellow" and "(Blue)", just about everything Luis Bunuel ever made, and all of Michael Moore's films.

Interest in travel/favorite places: Paris is the most beautiful city I have been to, and I dream of living there at least part time. I also enjoyed Costa Rica and I love both New York and San Francisco. There are many places in the world I haven't seen and I want to see them all.

Hobbies & pastimes: Besides reading? Playing piano, cooking, wine
Religion and interest in religion: A former born-again Christian who crawled back into the womb in my 20s and never looked back.

Things you would still like to accomplish in your life time: I would like to travel the world, write a truly great novel, and help combat global warming in some way.

What changes in recent society please you the most?: The empowerment of so many non-white-male groups; tolerance; the revived conversation about health care (thanks, Michael!).

What disturbs you most about today's society?: Indifference toward global warming, which is a huge crisis, and poverty.

Most important characteristics in a date or mate: Humor and intellect! I have never fallen in love with a man who didn't make me laugh. Sexual wisdom and passion. Kindness and the ability to resolve conflicts in a respectful manner. Enough energy to keep up with me, or even to surpass mine.

Write a short sketch about yourself: I'm an author with a very curious mind, a passion for life, vast amounts of energy, and a big heart. I'm also easily bored and so I need intellectual and physical stimulation to stay engaged with a person. I'm interested in companionship, and I'm indifferent to marriage.

Preferred method of contact by other SBL members (write, phone, e-mail): Writing or emailing works best at first, for me.

Ask me on another day and it might be quite different.

What's on your night table: Currently finishing up Possession by A S Byatt, three books on Evolutionary psychology, biographies on Drake and Elizabeth the Winter Queen in the queue, and a book on knitting dog sweaters, accompanied by a partial, ugly sweater.

Favorite periodicals & newspapers: Dwell, Metropolis, Harper's, Cook's Illustrated, and the Design within Reach catalog, The NYT and the Guardian

Interest and taste in the arts: Everything from poetry readings to roller derby

Interest in taste in music: Wilco, Sigur Ros, Sufjan Stevens, Arcade Fire, Johnny Cash, Nusrat fateh Ali Kahn.....

Interest and taste in films/favorites: Film is sort of my lighter side of media, eclectic but not rigidly arthouse.

Religion and interest in religion: I believe in a nebulous deity and by virtue of my love of evolutionary psychology spend a lot of time poking that belief with a stick. It's rather amusing to watch one's self go along with something you are sure is a mem or adaptive evolutionary behavior.

Things you would still like to accomplish in your life time: do an MPH program. Make an attractive dog sweater. Spend a month in India. Sunbathe on Split with a wicked hangover while emulating a terrible case of ennui.

What changes in recent society please you the most?: Understanding that we are on a continuum of development, not finished products, and the choices we make about how we treat our earth, our bodies, our minds, effects where human kind will evolve.

What disturbs you most about today's society?: That a disturbing number of people seem very vested in ignoring the above.

Most important characteristics in a date or mate: Deep and solid, as well cultivated in the heart space as in the head space. Enjoys a bit of snarky wit. Can occasionally strike a balance between the complexity of living and the simplicity of being. Likes to eat and drink, and can help wash up afterwards.

Write a short sketch about yourself: For all the busyness the above has entailed, and below my forward personality lies a person who really values a little quiet and puttering in the quietness of my home. My life has primarily been about service and activism, and though I like "things" as much as the next person, ideas and doings are the valued commodity in my house.
I clean up very nice because I do lobbying on the state level, however I would prefer to wear my pink cowboy boots, leave the tiny stud in my nose, and not bother covering my tattoos. As well, I am dyslexic and I am smarter than I spell so give me a little slack in that department please.

A2072, 74, D and W, 5'3'', Retired Editor. University of Wisconsin.

Favorite books: Literary -- Among the well-known, I'd include Middlemarch, Catcher in the Rye, Blonde, Life on the Mississippi, The Great Gatsby, and The Kite Runner. Scientific -- The Mind and the Brain by Schwartz and Begley. Political -- Active Liberty by Stephen Breyer.

What's on your night table: John Adams by David McCullough.

Favorite authors: Good historical novels are a treat, such as Patrick O'Brian's series on the British navy during the Napoleonic Wars, Conrad Richter's trilogy on pioneer life along the Ohio River, and Allan Eckert's A Sorrow in Our Heart on the great Shawnee leader Tecumseh. Favorite authors also include Willa Cather, W.H. Auden, Wallace Stegner, Joyce Carol Oates, and the early Doris Lessing.

Favorite periodicals & newspapers: I start my day with The Washington Post, and have been getting the Wall Street Journal -- but since Rupert Murdoch took over, am letting my subscription run out. In its place I may subscribe to the Chronicle of Higher Education. Is it still as good as it used to be? I can't find a copy in Borders, etc. Some very good publications, such as NYR, demand more time than I can manage right now.

Interest and taste in the arts: Vermeer, Copley, Constable, Hopper, Sargent, Homer, O'Keeffe, Neal, etc. I especially like to visit the National Portrait Gallery in DC to ponder the portraits of famous people, past and present. Also: the theater, especially plays that tackle serious subjects. And poetry readings and book lectures and signings.

Interest in taste in music: Not my strongest point. I usually dislike pop music; also tend to avoid choral music, a reaction no doubt to a childhood with its seemingly endless hours in church. Really like outdoor folk festivals.

Interest and taste in films/favorites: Since discovering Netflix, I've been consuming large quantities of French, German and Russian movies. Such films are also shown on MHZ, a new PBS channel. Oldies: Film noir, From Here to Eternity. Recent: Frida, In the Valley of Elah. Also, good renditions of books, such as Atonement, Persuasion, and the four-hour Gettysburg.

Interest in travel/favorite places: This is a great interest -- everything from moseying around nearby Chesapeake Bay to the antiquities of Greece. Foreign travel: So far, I've been to France, Italy, Ireland, Guatemala, and bits of England, Holland, and Germany. I'd love to do more traveling abroad. Domestic favorites: the American Southwest, French Canada, Key West, and anywhere I can look at water.

Hobbies & pastimes: Although retired, I voluntarily edit a monthly newsletter, which is almost a part-time job. Most of my interests involve topics already mentioned. Not yet mentioned: PBS, NPR and C-SPAN 1,2&3. I follow politics and the news fairly closely and often go to lectures on these topics available in DC.This sounds corny, but I'm a great audience for spectacles. Antique aviation shows, for instance, or a sailing regatta.

Religion and interest in religion: Unitarian. Interested in comparative religion, religious trends, and religion's influences, both good and not so good, on history.

Things you would still like to accomplish in your life time: I'd like to talk about this later.

What changes in recent society please you the most?: The spread of tolerance in my lifetime.

What disturbs you most about today's society?: The brutalization of our culture. Big money running our government. The widening gap between rich and poor. The environment. The war.

Most important characteristics in a date or mate: He's admirable: kind, intelligent, serious-minded but not "tight-lipped," a concerned liberal. He's fun to be with, enthusiastic when going places and doing things, conversationally interesting, and easy on the give-and-take.

Write a short sketch about yourself: As a person who's paid little attention to sports, I suddenly find myself wanting to understand football and/or baseball as seen on TV, and would enjoy a willing teacher. But mostly, I'm attracted to issues and ideas. I'm small (short and slender), fairly presentable and young-looking for my age. I live next to a Metro (subway) station and have easy access to the city's cultural events. Finally, in the spirit of equality, I have always paid my own way.

Favorite books: The Collected Short Stories of Flannery O'Connor; The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien;Grendel by John Gardner; Collected Stories of Katherine Anne Porter; anything by Billy Collins (who used to be the U.S. Poet Laureate); anything by Alice Munro & William Trevor. I like anything that is well-written, esp. collections of prize-winning short stories, such as the annual O.Henry Awards collections. I gravitate toward books that have won awards: Pulitzers, Nobels, Booker Prize. . . .

What's on your night table: The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai; the current New Yorker magazine & today's N.Y. Times.

Favorite authors: Besides the above, I could compile a long list. One mustn't forget Shakespeare & Dickens (& Chaucer, for that matter.) Don't leave out Mark Twain. I'd have to list Woody Allen. Also, in no particular order: Ruth Rendell, Evelyn Waugh, Howard Nemerov, Seamus Heaney, James Joyce, E.B. White, Amy Tan, James Thurber, Shel Silverstein, Annie Proulx, Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I have an old sweatshirt that says "So many books, so little time." I do identify with that!

Favorite periodicals & newspapers: The New Yorker, Smithsonian, The N.Y. Times.

Interest and taste in the arts: I love good independent & foreign films; also, good plays (both regular length & one act); I enjoy music & art & dance as well. (The most recent art show I visited was the Salvador Dali one in Philadelphia.).

Interest in taste in music: My musical tastes run to folk/pop (such as the WXPN radio station in Philadelphia.) I like Bob Dylan,Bruce Springsteen (esp. The Rising, the album he did after 9/11); the Indigo Girls, for example. I also like classical.

Interest and taste in films/favorites: I do enjoy some of the oldies (such as one sees on Turner Classic Movies), but independent & foreign films I really like. Brokeback Mountain was a recent favorite. (I had already read the Proulx short story.) I got a 10-pass recently & talked a couple of girlfriends into going with me to the recent Phila. movie festival. (My husband & I used to love going to the movie festivals up there.).

Interest in travel/favorite places: I do like to travel, but have not necessarily done a very great deal. The favorite places I have visited, however, include the west coast of Ireland; northern England; Provence; Yosemite National Park; Calgary,Alberta; Floyd County, Va. (my birth county.).

Hobbies & pastimes: I love to read. I play Scrabble competitively. I play Scrabble at 2 clubs every week & enter occasional tournaments. (However, a potential male friend is not required to be a Scrabble player.
{smile}) I go to water aerobics a couple of mornings a week for exercise, & I try to get in some walking, as well.

Religion and interest in religion: I am a member of the local Unitarian Church & have been for almost 25 years. It suits me very well; I have a definitely liberal bent & I like this church's take on things. Thus, I do not have a traditional Christian view of things.

Things you would still like to accomplish in your life time: I wrote a book a few years ago about my dad's & mom's families. I included more than genealogy, however. I interviewed family members & put in a lot of old "family stories." I might get inspired to do a sequel that would take things up to the present. I think the first book ended somewhere in the 1970's.

What changes in recent society please you the most?: I think there is much more acceptance of females in the workplace in this country. Also, gays seem to be less ostracized.

What disturbs you most about today's society?: I am sometimes troubled by the rise of the "far right" & its power in this country. We see it with the present administration. (Wish we could've stayed out of the war in Iraq!!) There is certainly a far right in the Muslim countries, as well. The U.S. has kind of alienated itself from several of our allies. (I have a hard time discussing this question without mentioning the current war, which has also driven up the national debt!!

Most important characteristics in a date or mate: Hmmm. It's so hard to say just exactly how he must look/act because appeal depends on so much upon intangibles, I think. Having said that, I'd list things like good sense of humor, kindness, dependability, honesty, intelligence, I guess.

Write a short sketch about yourself: Well. I never thought to be writing a sketch for Single Booklovers again. I never wanted to be in that position again! You see, I have recently been widowed for the THIRD time! (No, this is not a Hitchcock story. Not Agatha Christie, either.) I met both my 2nd & my 3rd husbands through Single Booklovers. (I should have asked for a discount!!) My 3rd husband just died in February, '07. We got along very well. We were married for 21 years. He did a great job helping me bring up my children. Even though he had stopped smoking 25 years before, he was diagnosed with lung cancer & succumbed anyway, even though he was treated for a year (chemo, surgery, radiation, the whole thing.)

Going further back, I grew up on a dairy farm in SW Va. I taught high school for 39 years, mostly English, but some French & journalism, as well. I have 3 kids, the 2 older ones adopted from S. Korea & the youngest my biological daughter. Now, I am a grandmom, as well. I do enjoy visiting with & playing with the 4 younger ones. (The oldest does not live near me.) My son has 3 little girls, 9,6 & 3. My youngest daughter has a baby boy 8 mo. old.

I am learning how to live alone, something I have actually not done before. (When I was previously widowed, I had small children with me.).

I do not really want to live alone for the rest of my life, so I guess I had to say "considerable," above when asked for my interest in marriage. Yes, I'd like to meet a congenial member of the opposite sex for friendship & perhaps something more, if it should develop into that.

Preferred method of contact by other SBL members (write, phone, e-mail): To begin, I'd rather correspond for at least a little while: email or write first, I guess. After that, phone would be OK.
